Breastfeeding Basics for New Moms

Breastfeeding is a beautiful and natural way to nourish your baby, but it can also feel overwhelming at first. As a new mom, it's normal to have questions, face challenges, and need support. Here are the essentials to help you feel more confident on your breastfeeding journey.

1. Start Early:
If possible, begin breastfeeding within the first hour after birth. This helps your baby latch and stimulates milk production. Early skin-to-skin contact also promotes bonding and regulates your baby’s body temperature.

2. Learn the Latch:
A proper latch is key. Your baby’s mouth should cover both the nipple and part of the areola. Listen for swallowing sounds, and check that breastfeeding doesn’t cause you pain—discomfort may signal a poor latch.

3. Feed on Demand:
Newborns usually feed every 2–3 hours, but it’s best to follow your baby’s cues. Crying is a late sign of hunger; early cues include rooting, sucking on hands, or lip smacking.

4. Stay Hydrated & Nourished:
Breastfeeding uses extra energy and fluids. Drink plenty of water and eat balanced meals to keep your milk supply healthy and steady.

5. Ask for Help:

Lactation consultants, midwives, or experienced moms can provide valuable guidance. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you’re facing challenges like low supply, soreness, or latching issues.

6. It's Okay to Feel Overwhelmed:
Breastfeeding can take time to master. Every mom and baby pair is different. Be patient with yourself, and remember: fed is best. Whether you breastfeed, pump, or supplement, your love is what matters most.
