Dealing with Newborn Gas: Tips and Tricks

Gas is a common challenge for newborns and can lead to fussiness, crying, and sleepless nights. Their tiny digestive systems are still developing, so it's normal for them to experience discomfort after feeding. The good news? There are simple and gentle ways to ease your baby’s gassy tummy.

1. Burp Often During and After Feeding
Don’t wait until the end of a feed to burp your baby. Try pausing mid-feed and again afterward to release any air swallowed during feeding.

2. Watch the Feeding Position
Keep your baby’s head higher than their stomach during feeding. This helps milk settle and air rise up, making it easier to burp.

3. Try Gentle Tummy Massage
Use warm hands to massage your baby’s tummy in a clockwise motion. This can help move trapped gas through their system and ease discomfort.

4. Bicycle Their Legs
Lay your baby on their back and gently move their legs in a pedaling motion. This movement can help release gas and relieve pressure.

5. Evaluate Your Diet (for Breastfeeding Moms)

Some foods in your diet (like dairy, caffeine, or cruciferous vegetables) might affect your baby. If you suspect a link, consider keeping a food diary and consulting your pediatrician.

6. Use a Warm Towel or Bath
Warmth can soothe your baby’s tummy. A warm (not hot) towel placed on their belly or a gentle warm bath may provide relief.

7. Stay Calm and Be Patient
Gas is uncomfortable but usually temporary. As your baby grows, their digestive system will mature, and the symptoms will improve.
